Adhika Masa....

One thing to notice....

Hindu Festival - Diwali:
2008 :    October 28
2009 :    October 17
2010 :    November 5
2011 :    October 26
Observation :  Diwali always occurs in the month of October or November

Islam Festival - Ramadan:
2007:   12/13 Sep to 12 Oct.
2008:      1/2  Sep to 1 Oct.
2009:  21/22  Aug to 20 Sep.
2010:  10/11  Aug to 9 Sep.
Observation :  Ramadan season has a 11-day difference every year.

Question:

Why these dates are not consistent every year. And why there is no uniformity in this inconsistency among Hindu and Islam Calendars..

Reason:
There are two calendars which we follow: Solar Calendar and Lunar Calendar.
A solar calendar is based on the the position of the earth on its revolution around the sun. While, a Lunar Calendar is based on the cycles of the moon around the Earth. In simple terms, the English calendar which comprises of twelve months and 365.25 days is Solar Calendar.

Our Indian calendar whether it is Islam one or Hindu one, is based on a lunar calendar. A lunar month is 29.5 days long. Thus, a lunar year consists of 354 solar days and of-course, a solar year consists of 365 days. Hence, we can see that, each lunar month starts earlier to the corresponding solar month. There is a difference of eleven days between the lunar and solar year.

For every two or three solar years, this difference between the two calendars sums up to a full month. Hindu calendar compensates this to get the two calendars similar by adding an extra month., while the Islam calendar doesn't do that.

This compensation in-order to get an extra month is termed as 'Adhika Masa' (Extra Month) which occurs almost for every two years. It must be noted here that there is no Adhika Masam in the calendars followed in Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Orissa and Tamil Nadu as it is based on Solar Calendar.

Concern:
From 2017 to 2020, our Muslim friends have to do their fast in the Summer season as Ramadan falls during the months of May - April - March., which will be a tough task (as far as I see) as it will be a hot summer ..

Chandigarh belongs to whom..?

Name the common capital of two states in India.

This was my 4th class Social Studies question and the answer is 'Chandigarh'.

Now, the question is... Chandigarh belongs to whom?

Is it the capital of Punjab or the capital of Haryana?  Have found few interesting things on this.

Almost after eighteen years of agitation , creation of a Punjabi speaking state was announced. On 1 November 1966, the Indian state of Haryana was carved out of the Punjab, in order to create a majority Hindi speaking state, while the western portion of Punjab remained as the current day Punjab.

However, it was Punjabi speaking people's demand for separation and they forced Hindi people to create a new state. By that time Chandigarh was the capital of the then Punjab. And Hindi people were asked to move out of Chandigarh in search of a new capital for which, they had disagreed.

Chandigarh was on the border, and both the states needed that city to be their capital and thus, it was created into a union territory to serve as capital of both these states. It was the capital of Punjab alone from 1952 to 1966. Later, the commission which created this state allocated Chandigarh to Haryana as it had more Hindi speaking population .

On this issue, many agitations took place again. Many fasts unto death were kept by Sikhs and Hindus. Sardar Darshan Singh started fasting unto death and died on 74th day of his fast. Later, Sant Fateh Singh, President of Shiromani Akali Dal went on fast declaring that if demand for restoring Chandigarh to Punjab is not met, he would burn himself alive. The Government later announced its decision to hand over Chandigarh to Punjab, in lieu of some areas to Haryana.

Chandigarh was supposed to be transferred to Punjab in 1986, in accordance with an agreement signed in August 1985 by Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, with Sant Harchand Singh. Chandigarh functioned as a common capital for both the states and Haryana was given 15 years of time to build it's own capital.

Since then, the creation of a new capital for Haryana and the transfer had been delayed. Government is still not clear about which villages in Punjab are to be transferred to Haryana, and vice versa.

It is now believed that transfer is not possible as none of the states would like to give up their claims and Chandigarh would remain to be the capital of both states and also an union territory.

May be, in near future, we see the same thing to happen with Hyderabad. Whatever it is.... I can say that it is not an easy task for an aspiring state to grab the capital city of the existing state.

Why do Peacocks spread their feathers?

Why Do Peacocks Spread Their Feathers?

We were told in our childhood days that in monsoon season, when the weather is good, Peacock spreads his feathers and dances in joy. The peacock raises his long colorful tail feathers into the air and shakes them. Many poets use this common phenomenon in their literary works to compare joy, pride, dance and happiness.

But, there is some other thing which Peacock tries to tell. He spreads his feathers and puts on a show to attract the Peahen. He faces the peahen, with his rustling tail feathers and follows her around making loud mating calls. If the peahen takes interest, she will allow the peacock to mate with her.

Now, another analysis ... what will Peahen see in Peacock to accept him?

Peacock spreads his feathers in-front of the Peahen. The wider he spreads, the more energetic he is... if he has got some diseases or any genetic problems, he will not be able to spread them properly.

What a Peahen needs is... an association which is energetic, healthy and fit which can save her and the next generation from enemies in the forest. If the Peacock is healthy, he will be passing the same genes to the consecutive generations, and hence the entire clan will be capable of facing the enemies in an effective way.

So, we can say that the theory of finding a better match is natural for all the species...
